President Donald Trump is reportedly negotiating a prisoner swap deal that would see nine Americans returned home from Russia.
The Associated Press reported that Trump discussed the deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin during their phone call this week.
Russian presidential adviser Yuri Ushakov made the announcement after Trump and Putin spoke for two hours Monday.
Ushakov previously served as Russian ambassador to the U.S.
Putin and Trump talked about a Russia-U.S. prisoner exchange, Ushakov revealed.
Ushakov said the deal was “in the works.”
He said the deal would involve Moscow and Washington releasing nine people each.
However, he did not offer any other details.
The State Department has not yet commented on the reports.
The development comes following the release of Russian-American Ksenia Karelina.
Karelina was freed from Russia in April after being detained for more than a year.
Both Trump and Putin described the call on Monday in a positive light.
The Kremlin chief said the call was “frank” and “useful.”
However, they have yet to clarify what results were achieved.
Trump took to social media to praise the call as having gone “very well.”
“Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War,” Trump said.
In a statement after the call, Putin also noted that “a ceasefire with Ukraine is possible.”
Putin also noted, however, that “Russia and Ukraine must find compromises that suit both sides.”
