President Donald Trump, on Monday, made it clear that his patience with Russian President Vladimir Putin is running out as the war in Ukraine continues to rage with no resolution in sight.
Speaking alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland, Trump expressed his “disappointment” with Putin.
The president declared he was shortening Putin’s deadline for a peace deal, now pushing for results in just 10 to 12 days.
Trump’s frustration with Putin was evident as he described the ongoing violence in Ukraine.
“Every time we think we’ve made progress with Putin, he launches another rocket into some city like Kyiv, killing people, even in places like nursing homes,” Trump said.
“Bodies lying all over the street—that’s not the way to do it.”
He underscored his resolve to see a peaceful resolution to the conflict, adding:
“We just don’t see any progress being made.”
This marks a shift in Trump’s approach.
Originally, he had set a 50-day timeline for Putin to reach a peace agreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
However, the deadline now seems to be shrinking due to Russia’s continued aggression.
Trump made it clear that there is no reason to wait any longer for a breakthrough in negotiations.
“I’m going to make the new deadline of about 10 or 12 days from today,” Trump stated.
“There’s no reason in waiting.
“We just don’t see any progress being made.”
Trump is pushing Putin hard to negotiate a resolution or face severe consequences.
WATCH:
Trump’s previous ultimatum, which included a threat to impose 100% tariffs on Russia, now looms large.
If Putin does not make significant progress in reaching a peace deal with Zelensky within the revised deadline, Trump has vowed to impose “secondary tariffs” targeting countries that continue to do business with Russia.
This includes those who purchase Russian oil and gas, further isolating Putin’s regime.
In an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on July 14, Trump had already warned that failure to deliver a peace deal would result in the imposition of these steep tariffs on Russian trade partners, making it even more painful for Moscow.
However, sources close to the Kremlin have reportedly said that Putin remains unfazed by Trump’s earlier deadline, a sentiment that only fuels Trump’s sense of urgency.
The situation has only grown more dire in recent weeks, as Russia has escalated its attacks on Ukraine.
The latest missile and drone strikes have targeted Kyiv and other major cities, killing civilians and injuring dozens more.
These attacks come despite ongoing peace talks between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators, which, so far, have failed to produce any significant results.
In Istanbul last week, the two sides met for another round of discussions, but the only outcome was an agreement to exchange prisoners.
The crux of the issue remains Putin’s demand that Ukraine cede the territory that Russian forces have occupied since their initial invasion more than three years ago.
Zelensky, however, has firmly rejected that demand.
Moreover, Putin’s refusal to meet with Zelensky in person has further complicated any potential resolution.
The Russian president has criticized Zelensky’s leadership, particularly pointing to the country’s declaration of martial law and the absence of a presidential election last year.
Trump’s growing impatience with Putin is a reflection of his commitment to ending the conflict swiftly, and it remains to be seen whether Putin will heed the new deadline.
The question now is whether the international community will support Trump’s tough stance or whether Putin’s belligerence will continue to fuel the war.
As the world watches, Trump’s call for a swift resolution offers hope to those seeking an end to the bloodshed.
Trump’s words are a stark warning to Putin that time is running out for Russia to change course.
