President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that seeks to crack down on pro-Hamas protests from anti-Semitic foreign nationals.
A White House official said Trump signed the order on Wednesday to combat anti-Semitism and pledge to deport non-citizen college students and others who took part in pro-Hamas protests in America.
The order directs agency heads to submit recommendations to the Trump administration within 60 days.
The recommendations must outline all of the federal government’s available tools to combat anti-Semitism.
Under the order, the Department of Justice (DOJ) is instructed to quell pro-Hamas vandalism and intimidation.
The DOJ must investigate and punish “anti-Jewish racism in leftist, anti-American colleges and universities.”
The order comes in response to a rise in anti-Semitic protests in support of Hamas’s brutal terrorist attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023.
Many of these protests have taken place on college campuses.
Students have been documented defending Hamas’s attack, chanting ethnic cleansing slogans, committing vandalism, and setting up encampments.
The “protests” have led to the harassment and intimidation of Jewish students at American schools.
Anti-Semitic incidents on campus have surged over 500% since the October 7 attack, according to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).
Trump’s order also accuses former president Joe Biden’s administration of refusing to protect the civil rights of American Jews and of “turning a blind eye to this coordinated assault on public order.”
Congress has led efforts to investigate and punish universities that failed to curb anti-Semitism on their campuses.
A December congressional report on anti-Semitism found that some of America’s most prominent universities not only refused to crack down on anti-Semitism.
However, those same schools gave disparate disciplinary actions to Jewish students versus their antagonists.
“The failure of our federal government departments and agencies is astounding,” the report states.
In a September speech, Trump warned that he would “inform every college president that if you do not end anti-Semitic propaganda, they will lose their accreditation and federal taxpayer support.”
Trump added that Jewish Americans must have “equal protection.”
The United States government will not “subsidize the creation of terrorist sympathizers, and we’re not going to do it, certainly [not] on American soil,” he warned.
