President Donald Trump had strong words for former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan after he announced his decision to leave the Republicans and join the Democratic Party.
The announcement followed Duncan’s expulsion from the state GOP earlier this year for disloyalty.
Duncan, who served as lieutenant governor from 2019 to 2023 as a Republican, made the switch official in an op-ed published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday.

The move came after years of openly criticizing Trump, including his response to the 2020 election and the events surrounding January 6th, 2021.
Trump wasted no time expressing his disapproval of Duncan’s political pivot.
In a Truth Social post early Friday morning, the president blasted Duncan as a “total loser.”
Trump said the GOP was better off without him.
“Failed former Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan, of Georgia, is a total loser,” Trump wrote.
“Was never able to get anything done, all he ever did was complain.
“We didn’t want him in the Republican Party any longer, so I’m told he became a Democrat.
“Good riddance, Geoff,” he added.
“You don’t even have a chance!!!”
This isn’t the first time Trump has criticized Duncan, who had a contentious relationship with the president.
On August 3, 2024, Trump took to Truth Social and called Duncan a “bum.”
The president was expressing his frustration with Duncan’s stance on key issues.
“He is a total lightweight, and went to work at a low salary for Fake News CNN,” Trump wrote.
“His sole function is to knock Donald J. Trump.
“Georgia should throw this ‘bum’ out of the Party.
“He is unelectable and not respected by anyone, other than your lightweight Governor, Brian Kemp, who, if it wasn’t for me, would have never been Governor….”
Duncan’s decision to join the Democratic Party, he said in his op-ed, was a result of both ideological differences with the GOP and his struggle with his role in the party.
He specifically pointed to his opposition to Trump’s claims about the 2020 election and Jan. 6.
“There’s no date on a calendar or line in the sand that points to the exact moment in time my political heart changed, but it has,” Duncan wrote.
“My decision was centered around my daily struggle to love my neighbor, as a Republican.”
The Georgia GOP expelled Duncan from the party earlier this year, particularly after he endorsed Joe Biden during the 2024 election campaign.
He then continued his support for Kamala Harris when she replaced Biden.
In the wake of the expulsion, Duncan was told by Georgia GOP Chair Josh McKoon to stop using his Republican credentials in public and media appearances.
The Georgia GOP further criticized Duncan for using his position as a Republican to “attack the Republican Party” during his tenure as a CNN contributor.
