President Donald Trump has just announced that his administration will take new steps to defend students’ rights to pray in public schools.
The president blasted what he described as growing hostility to faith in the education system.
The Monday announcement came during the second official hearing of the Religious Liberty Commission, held at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C.
The session focused on religious liberty and public education, with students testifying about how their beliefs had been challenged or punished in classrooms.
“For most of our country’s history, the Bible was found in every classroom in the nation, yet in many schools, today’s students are instead indoctrinated with anti-religious propaganda and some are even punished for their religious beliefs,” Trump said.
He highlighted the case of Hannah Allen, a Texas student who was reprimanded for gathering with classmates during lunch to pray for an injured friend.
“To support students like Hannah, I’m pleased to announce this morning that the Department of Education will soon issue new guidance protecting the right to prayer in our public schools,” Trump declared.
While the details of the new guidance are not yet clear, the Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of a Washington high school football coach who was fired for leading voluntary post-game prayers, holding that the district violated his constitutional rights.
‘America Prays’ Initiative
Trump also used the occasion to launch the administration’s new “America Prays” initiative.
The initiative will encourage Americans to gather in groups of ten once a week to pray for the nation.
The move underscores Trump’s pledge to restore faith to the public square and defend the free exercise of religion against what he has described as attacks from the Left.
Addressing Anti-Christian Violence
During the hearing, Trump also pledged to pursue answers about last month’s attack on a Catholic school in Minnesota, where a transgender-identifying male opened fire.
“Two weeks ago, in Minneapolis, a demonic killer shot 21 people and murdered the two precious children at a Catholic school,” Trump said.
“Our hearts are shattered for the families of those beautiful children.”
“The Trump administration will have no tolerance for terrorism or political violence, and that includes hate crimes against Christians, Jews, or anybody else,” he added.
Religious Liberty Commission’s Mandate
Trump created the Religious Liberty Commission in May through an executive order.
The commission is tasked with producing a comprehensive report on the foundations of religious freedom and identifying the greatest threats to it today.
For Trump, the effort is part of a broader push to restore prayer, faith, and traditional values to American public life.
It comes in sharp contrast with decades of court rulings and policies that restricted religious expression in schools.
