Two Pennsylvania State Troopers Shot During Pursuit

Two Pennsylvania state police officers were gravely wounded Monday evening after being shot during a pursuit of retail theft suspects in Franklin County, authorities confirmed.

The incident began shortly after 6:10 p.m., when troopers were dispatched to a Dick’s Sporting Goods in Guilford Township on reports of a theft in progress.

The suspects fled the store in a vehicle and led police on a chase toward Interstate 81.

Troopers deployed spike strips to stop the car near Exit 3, forcing it off the roadway.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, two female suspects surrendered without incident.

Moments later, a male suspect opened fire on officers.

The gunman struck two troopers before being fatally shot when officers returned fire.

The wounded officers were airlifted to Wellspan York Hospital.

One remains in critical condition and the other in serious condition.

Their names have not yet been released.

Governor Josh Shapiro (D-PA) said he and his wife, Lori, were praying for the injured officers.

“Pennsylvania’s law enforcement officers are the very best of us — running towards danger every day to keep our communities safe,” Shapiro wrote on X.

“Please join me in praying for the injured troopers, their loved ones, and every member of Pennsylvania State Police.”

The Pennsylvania State Troopers Association (PSTA) echoed the call for prayers, highlighting the sacrifices of officers who confront violent criminals daily.

“Each day, the men and women of the Pennsylvania State Police go to work prepared to give their last full measure,” the group posted on X.

“We can never thank them enough for their incredible bravery.”

Authorities stressed there is no ongoing threat to the public, though the investigation remains active.

The attack comes amid a troubling rise in violence against police in Pennsylvania.

Just last month, three officers were ambushed and killed while responding to a domestic call in York County.

The suspected gunman in that case was shot and killed by police.

Earlier this year, another York County officer lost his life during a shootout at UPMC Memorial Hospital.

Law enforcement groups say these incidents underscore the escalating dangers officers face as repeat offenders and violent criminals increasingly target police.
