United Nations Chief Warns Globalism Is on ‘Deathwatch’

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned international elites that globalism has now been pushed “onto deathwatch” as sovereign countries increasingly begin putting their own citizens first.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres just delivered the dramatic and ominous warning to world leaders as he prepares to step down as head of the UN in 2026.

He declared that international cooperation is now crumbling as nations increasingly reject globalist institutions like the UN.

Guterres issued the remarks Thursday during what will be his final annual priorities speech.

The UN chief is portraying a world spiraling into chaos amid geopolitical fractures, defiance of international law, and sharp reductions in humanitarian aid.

According to Guterres, these issues have arisen due to the downfall of globalism.

“At a time when we need international cooperation the most, we seem to be the least inclined to use it and invest in it,” Guterres said, accusing unnamed governments of actively weakening the international system and creating what he called “self-defeating geopolitical divides.”

While Guterres did not name specific countries, the warning came as the United States under President Donald Trump has reasserted national sovereignty, launched operations in Venezuela, and signaled potential military action against Iran.

These moves have alarmed global institutions long accustomed to American deference.

“The Context Is Chaos”

Guterres painted a bleak picture of the global landscape, declaring:

“The context is chaos,” he told delegates.

“We are a world brimming with conflict, impunity, inequality, and unpredictability.”

He cited conflicts ranging from Ukraine to Gaza, Yemen, and Sudan, warning that international institutions are losing influence as nations increasingly act independently.

“That is the paradox of our era: at a time when we need international cooperation the most, we seem to be the least inclined to use it and invest in it,” he said.

“Some seek to put international cooperation on deathwatch.

“I can assure you: we will not give up.”

Guterres also repeated long-standing UN claims that poverty, inequality, and weak institutions are the primary drivers of violence.

“Peace is more than the absence of war,” he said.

“Sustainable peace requires sustainable development.”

He added that “millions are trapped in cycles of violence, hunger and displacement,” calling for expanded global intervention.

Putin Echoes Warning, Blames Western Power

On the same day, Vladimir Putin delivered remarks in Moscow that echoed Guterres’s warnings, though from a sharply different perspective.

Speaking to newly appointed ambassadors at the Kremlin, Putin said the global situation is rapidly deteriorating.

“The situation on the international stage is increasingly deteriorating — I don’t think anyone would argue with that — long-standing conflicts are intensifying, and new serious flashpoints are emerging,” Putin said with a smile.

Putin did not mention the United States or President Trump by name, but he criticized what he described as Western domination.

“We hear a monologue from those who, by the right of might, consider it permissible to dictate their will, lecture others, and issue orders,” he said, insisting that Russia remains committed to what he called a “multipolar world.”

“We hope that recognition of this need will come sooner or later,” Putin added.

“Until then, Russia will continue to consistently pursue its goals.”

Accusations of Western Hypocrisy

More junior Russian officials have, in recent days, accused the West of hypocrisy, arguing it is absurd for Washington to lecture Moscow while engaging in what they describe as unprovoked interventions, including operations in Venezuela and threats of new war against Iran.

The remarks underscore growing resistance to Western-led global governance as institutions like the United Nations warn of collapse.

Meanwhile, critics argue that those same institutions are unraveling precisely because sovereign nations are no longer willing to submit to unelected global authorities.
