Vice President JD Vance has addressed growing speculation about a possible 2028 presidential ticket with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
It follows President Donald Trump’s recent remarks calling the pair “unstoppable.”
On Wednesday, Vance appeared on the New York Post’s “Pod Force One with Miranda Devine.”
During the interview, he confirmed that the idea of a future Vance-Rubio ticket had come up before, including in private conversations with the president.
“We try to get lunch every couple of weeks just to catch up on what’s going on and talk about things,” Vance said, describing his regular meetings with Trump.
“[Trump] mentioned it probably six months or so ago,” Vance recalled.
“And I mentioned it to the secretary in jest, but it feels so premature because we’re still so early.”
“If We Take Care of Business, the Politics Will Take Care of Itself”
Vance said he and Trump briefly discussed the idea over lunch roughly half a year ago.
However, he emphasized that his focus remains on the administration’s current work rather than future campaigns.
“What I always say to people is, if we take care of business, the politics will take care of itself,” he said.
“And we’re nine months into this thing.
“We’ve done a lot of good.”
While Vance credited the administration with making progress during its first nine months, he acknowledged that there is “a lot more work to do,” particularly in addressing what he described as the “affordability crisis” inherited from the Biden administration.
“Again, we’ve chipped away at that problem, but there’s a lot more work to do there,” Vance said.
“So my attitude is, the American people elected me to be vice president.
“I’m going to work as hard as I can to make the president successful over the next three years and three months.”
“And if we get to a point where something else is in the offing, let’s handle it then.
“But let’s at least get through the next couple of years and do good work for the American people before we talk about politics.”
Vance Dismisses Talk of Tension with Rubio
Asked by Devine whether there might be “tension” between him and Rubio over who would lead such a ticket, Vance dismissed the idea, describing Rubio as both a close ally and friend.
“He and I work a lot together,” Vance said.
“A lot of the good work that we’ve been able to do as an administration is because we’re all able to work together.”
He added that Rubio, who is 13 years older and has previously run for president, remains his “best friend in the administration.”
“What I wake up and think to myself is, ‘How do I do a good job as vice president?’” Vance said.
“And I think Marco Rubio asks himself, ‘How do I do a good job as secretary of state?’
“And that should be the question that each of us keeps on asking ourselves.”
Staying Focused on the Job
Vance told Devine that focusing on personal ambition distracts from the responsibilities of public office.
“Worrying too much about politics makes you worse at the job that you have,” he said.
“I have never woken up and thought to myself, ‘How do I make myself president of the United States?’”
WATCH:
The vice president’s comments come just days after Trump publicly floated the potential Vance-Rubio ticket while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, describing the two men as “unstoppable.”
Vance, for now, appears content to keep his attention on the administration’s ongoing agenda and to leave the next campaign for when the time comes.
