Zohran Mamdani, the self-described socialist candidate for New York City mayor, is facing significant online backlash after a recently surfaced clip revealed that he took time off from his job because he could rely on his parents for financial support.
The clip, which was posted on X by a Washington Free Beacon reporter, has raised eyebrows given Mamdani’s progressive policies and his criticism of wealth inequality.
“I worked until January, and then I took time away from my job and one of the major reasons I could do that was because I knew that if I ran out of my savings, my family would be able to support me,” Mamdani explained during a Zoom call.

The revelation sparked criticism, with many pointing to the stark contrast between Mamdani’s comfortable upbringing and his advocacy for socialist policies, including higher taxes on the wealthy and increased government spending.
Critics argue that Mamdani’s comments expose a hypocrisy within his platform, suggesting that his financial reliance on his family contradicts his calls for redistributing wealth and imposing higher taxes on others.
In a post on X, New York Post columnist Kirsten Fleming wrote:
“The one thing my parents told me: if you aren’t working, and you don’t have money, we cannot and will not support you.
“This guy is very comfortable with other people’s money.”
Fox News contributor Katie Pavlich also chimed in, quoting Margaret Thatcher:
“‘The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.'”
Pavlich added that Mamdani’s actions exemplify this theory.
“Classic Socialism: Once I blow through my money, I’ll take yours,” former CIA officer Bryan Dean Wright posted.
Meanwhile, digital strategist Greg Price echoed similar sentiments, writing:
“Him and every other American socialist in 2025.”
Twitchy’s Amy Curtis bluntly called Mamdani “privileged,” and the criticism continued to mount across social media.
The controversy surrounding Mamdani’s comments comes as the socialist candidate, who won the Democrat mayoral primary last month, faces further scrutiny over his “silver spoon” upbringing.
Despite his working-class rhetoric, Mamdani’s privileged background has been used against him by opponents, including Mayor Eric Adams, who have pointed out the disconnect between his policies and his personal history.
Mamdani’s campaign has focused on far-left communist-style policies regarding housing affordability and taxpayer-subsidized programs.
His policies have caused concern among voters for the future of New York City.
However, as he moves toward the general election, Mamdani’s comments about relying on family wealth are likely to remain a point of contention as he faces off against former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and current Mayor Eric Adams in November.
The battle for the city’s future is heating up, with Mamdani’s socialist platform under intense scrutiny from critics on both sides of the aisle.
