The Washington Post has finally reached its limit and fired Felicia Sonmez after the “woke” reporter suffered a public meltdown on social media.
The Jeff Bezos-owned newspaper canned Sonmez today after she attacked the Post and her own colleagues.
Sonmez previously made headlines by getting one of her male colleagues suspended for a month without pay over a joke he made on social media.
Greg Price summed up what happened:
โDave Weigel retweeted a joke about how women are either crazy or bisexual.
“His female Washington Post colleagues are now on their 7th consecutive day of rage tweeting about it.
“I guess they answered the question.โ

But today she went too far and said: โI donโt know who the colleagues anonymously disparaging me in media reports are.
“But I do know that the reporters who issued synchronized tweets this week downplaying the Postโs workplace issues have a few things in common with each other.
โThey are all white,” she said.
“They are among the highest-paid employees in the newsroom, making double and even triple what some other National desk reporters are making, particularly journalists of color.
โThey are among the โstarsโ who โget away with murderโ on social media.
โOf course, the Washington Post is a great workplace,” she continued.
“It is a great workplace *for them.*
“The system is working *for them.*
“What about for everyone else?
“The General Assignment team? The Morning Mix team? The newsletter researchers?โ
โMany, *many* Post employees want the long-standing problems at the company to be addressed, not ignored.
โThe frustration has manifested itself not just on Twitter, but also in the Postโs employee retention problems, laid out here in painstaking detail by the Post Guild.
โThe online-harassment machine thatโs sought to trivialize all this as a ‘Twitter spat’ will eventually move on to other targets.
โBut these long-standing issues at the Post remain.
โTo borrow an analogy, working at a big news organization is like living in a big city
โEmergencies like corrections come up every day.
“Thatโs normal,” Sonmez continued in her epic, career suicide meltdown.
โAre sexist or racist tweets ‘normal’ emergencies?
“Is the denigration of a class of people a ‘normal’ emergency?
โOr are those things a sign of deeper problems within a newsroom rife with unequal treatment?
โTo those bizarrely attacking me for speaking out, or snidely saying things like ‘Day 7’ โ of course Iโm still speaking out.
โThis is about systemic issues that run far deeper than a single tweet by any employee.
“Pushing for change takes far longer than 7 days.
“And to the many folks inside and outside the Post who have voiced support and joined in calling for institutional change, thank you.
โIโm sorry I havenโt been able to reply to everyone yet because my DMs and inbox have been flooded (a good problem!!).
“But you all rock.โ
– They are all white
– They are among the highest-paid employees in the newsroom, making double and even triple what some other National desk reporters are making, particularly journalists of color
– They are among the โstarsโ who โget away with murderโ on social media. 10/
