Whoopi Goldberg suffered an on-air meltdown and ripped up a live legal correction note from producers during an episode of ABC’s “The View” this week.
Goldberg was passed a legal note and told to issue a correction after falsely claiming that President Donald Trump used an autopen to pardon Binance founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao.
The remark came as “The View” panel discussed Trump’s “60 Minutes” interview, in which the president addressed his decision to pardon Zhao, who pled guilty in 2023 to violating anti–money laundering laws.
During the “60 Minutes” segment, CBS host Norah O’Donnell asked Trump why he pardoned Zhao, noting the Justice Department under Biden had accused the crypto executive of “causing significant harm to U.S. national security” by allowing terrorist groups such as Hamas to move millions of dollars through Binance.
“Okay. Are you ready? I don’t know who he is,” Trump replied.
“I know he got a four-month sentence or something like that.
“And I heard it was a Biden witch hunt.”
Goldberg Jokes About ‘Autopen’ Pardon
On “The View,” co-host Sunny Hostin referenced reports that former President Biden used an autopen to sign certain pardons, prompting Goldberg to quip that Trump might have done the same.
“How come you don’t know who this guy is?” Hostin asked.
“Because he used an autopen,” Goldberg replied, drawing laughter from the audience.
Moments later, Hostin slid a piece of paper from the production team across the table for Goldberg to read.
“What the hell? What?” Goldberg said, before reading the note aloud:
“We don’t know if Trump used an autopen to pardon.”
Goldberg immediately tore up the note.
“It was a joke!” she shouted, ripping the paper into pieces as the audience reacted.
“No One Understands Nuance Anymore”
Goldberg then addressed the camera directly, frustrated by the producers’ warning.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
“The hardest thing about this job now is no one understands nuance.
“You know when you hear a joke, when somebody is fooling around, when they’re not saying something specific.”
She continued:
“Especially on this show. I’m very specific when I’m pointing stuff out.
“When I’m making jokes, you know when I’m making jokes.
“This is ridiculous!” she blasted.
WATCH:
According to Page Six, the note Hostin handed to Goldberg “came straight from the show’s production team.”
Goldberg’s on-air protest quickly went viral, highlighting the growing tension between network producers and hosts over the limits of political propaganda in live television, particularly when it involves President Trump.
