80-Year-Old Victim Fights Back, Shoots Home Invaders, Hitting One in Chest

An 80-year-old Chicago man was left critically wounded during a home invasion near O’Hare International Airport on Monday.

However, the homeowner refused to go down without a fight and sent the two thugs to the hospital after he opened fire during the home invasion.

The victim was inside his home around 10:30 am in the 8500 block of West Catherine when two people knocked on the front door.

When he opened the door, Mansfield Wallace, 51, of Evanston, and Tabitha Hemphill, 31, of Chicago, forced their way into the home.

But the thugs picked the wrong house because this victim had a FOID card and is licensed to carry a gun.

After a short struggle, the victim was able to fire a few rounds at the intruders.

He struck Wallace in the chest and grazed Hemphill with another bullet.

The homeowner was “battered and sustained several injuries throughout the body,” according to police.

He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

The 80-year-old victim was recovering from prostate surgery at the time of the attack.

According to CPD Scanner:

Hemphill then tried entering the hospital at multiple points, including a door that was under construction, apparently attempting to avoid detection and was unable to initially gain entry.

She eventually made it in and received treatment for the graze wound.

Police were called and arrived at the hospital. As she was being treated, Hemphill swallowed a bag with suspected heroin.

Hemphill was then found with a car key belonging to the car they alleged to have fled the home invasion, a bag with suspected heroin, and money were all found in her vaginal cavity.

Police then found that the vehicle, a Honda Pilot was reported stolen and they then found the victim’s gun was found in the same car.

Hemphill has a pending stolen vehicle case and a pending drug case.

Prosecutors say Hemphill has been placed on probation three times and has completed those probation sentences unsatisfactorily each time and has 3 bond forfeitures.

…Wallace has thirteen felony convictions, four retail thefts for which he was sentenced to 40 months, four years for a burglary, four years for a stolen car case, and is currently on parole and has an extensive history dating back to at least the early 2000s.

Prosecutors said he also has 4 bond forfeitures.

Wallace was charged with felony home invasion causing injury, aggravated battery of a victim over the age of 60, and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.

Hemphill was charged with felony home invasion causing great bodily harm.
