Another Drill Sergeant Found Dead at Fort Jackson Army Base, 2nd in 8 Days

Another drill sergeant has been found dead at the Fort Jackson U.S. Army base in South Carolina.

The U.S. Army revealed the death in a statement Monday.

The tragedy is the second such death in just over a week.

30-year-old Staff Sgt. Zachary L. Melton was found unresponsive on Saturday, the Army revealed.

The U.S. Army Garrison Fort Jackson said in a news release that Melton was found inside his vehicle on the base.

Melton was a drill sergeant with the 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment.

His body was found by unit personnel.

He was located after he failed to report for work.

In a statement, Fort Jackson’s commander Brig. Gen. Jason Kelly said:

“We are extremely saddened by the loss of Staff Sgt. Melton.

“Our thoughts are with his family and the soldiers of the Always Forward battalion during this very emotional time.”

No cause of death was immediately provided.

However, the statement said the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division is investigating.

Officials said military chaplains and behavioral health personnel are being provided to support members of the unit.

Less than two weeks before Melton’s death, 34-year-old Staff Sgt. Allen Burtram was also found dead on the base.

Burtram had also failed to report to work, the Columbia Post and Courier reported.

Officials had said Burtram’s death was also being investigated.

However, they confirmed that there were no signs of foul play.

“Our hearts are with the family of Staff Sgt. Burtram during this extremely difficult time,” Brig. Gen. Kelly said at the time.

“We are deeply saddened at the loss of one of our own.”

Likewise, Burtram’s cause of death has not been revealed.

In June, Army Sgt. Jaime Contreras also died suddenly during a training exercise at Fort Jackson.

40-year-old Contreras went missing during a training exercise and was later found dead.

His cause of death has still not been revealed.
