Popular Australian author and academic Professor Gemma Carey has tragically died suddenly after she was reportedly diagnosed with “vaccine-induced long-Covid.”
The mother-of-one Carey – who was once the director of the Centre for Social Impact at the University of New South Wales – died unexpectedly on November 17 “after a long battle with illness,” her family confirmed in a statement.
The sudden death of Canberra-based Carey will be the subject of a report to the coroner.
Friends say she had asked for information on “assisted suicide” after being told she may be suffering from long Covid.
Doctors had told Carey that her illness was caused by her Covid mRNA “vaccine.”
However, the illness was not life-threatening.
ACT police say the death is not regarded as suspicious.
“Gemma passed away on 17th November 2024 after a long battle with illness,’’ a family spokesperson said.
“Her family asks for privacy during this difficult time.”
Professor Carey was married with a young child and had returned to work this year after a three-year leave of absence.
Her illness was described as “vaccine-induced long-Covid.”
The young mother had written extensively on her health struggles with a vaccine injury and other illnesses.
She had also called for people to wear masks to protect the immune-compromised.
Author and researcher Joshua Leisk took to social media this week claiming that she was diagnosed with a “severe staph infection in the GI tract, which turned into septicemia and hyper-coagulation, hypoxia”.
“It became an intense ordeal during this period and sleep had become challenging,’’ he wrote.
“However, you may know she was also terrified of getting Covid.”
He claimed a doctor telling her she may have long Covid from an infection six months earlier “tipped her over the edge”.
“In complete despair, she reached out a few hours later for information on voluntary assisted dying,’’ he claimed.
The family has not confirmed or commented on Leisk’s claims, however.
Euthanasia will not be legal in Canberra until 2025.
Carey’s cause of death is unknown and the circumstances surrounding her sudden passing have been withheld from the public.
There is no suggestion Professor Carey died by suicide.
In a statement, police said that officers and ACT Ambulance Service paramedics were called to a residence in Dickson on 17 November 2024 following reports of an unconscious woman.
The woman was transported to hospital where she was declared deceased a short time later.
“The matter is not considered suspicious, and a report will be provided to the Coroner,’’ a spokesperson said.
Prof. Carey has written extensively about Covid and for many months rarely left the house during the pandemic.
In October 2022, in a public Facebook post, she insisted that friends needed to understand that “you could kill me” if they had Covid.
“You … can… not… come… near .. me. Or anyone in my bubble,” she said.
“I am not vaccinated. I am high-risk. You could kill me.
“Please do not come without 4 meters of me. And never indoors unless you just had a PCR test.”
Professor Carey hit the headlines three years ago after sparking a $200,000 legal row after a tweet about former Attorney-General Christian Porter and journalist Peter Van Onselen sent legal letters flying.
Carey made a nine-word post on X which then sparked the threat of defamation actions from Porter and Professor van Onselen.
She later apologised with Van Onselen reposting screenshots of her original apology on his own X account.
Professor Carey, who wrote in the disability space, said she had “lived with varying levels of physical disability when her immune system attacked her nervous system.”
Carey is survived by her young son and her husband Ben.
