Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) has ordered the FBI to hand over evidence it has on the “potential criminal activity” of Democrat President Joe Biden’s son Hunter.
Grassley is demanding information from federal law enforcement regarding Hunter Biden’s allegedly corrupt business deal with a Chinese Communist Party-linked company.
The senator, who serves as the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, believes that the FBI has evidence that implicates both Hunter and Joe Biden’s brother James.
Grassley has been leading congressional Republicans in calling for FBI oversight.
He has also received numerous whistleblower complaints from protected individuals who have alleged misconduct and political bias at the agency.
In an October 13 letter to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI, Grassley disclosed that his office “has received a significant number of protected communications from highly credible whistleblowers which have increased since my initial outreach to your offices.”
“Based on recent protected disclosures to my office, the FBI has within its possession significant, impactful, and voluminous evidence with respect to potential criminal conduct by Hunter Biden and James Biden,” Grassley wrote.
The allegations concerning Hunter and James Biden relate to a reported “lucrative” business deal with a foreign energy company connected to the Chinese Communist Party.
Emails from Hunter Biden’s notorious “Laptop from Hell” revealed that in 2017, Hunter and James Biden allegedly set up meetings with representatives from CEFC China Energy Co. to discuss forming a new holding company.
Tony Bobulinski, a former business partner of Hunter Biden’s, has alleged that the holding company would have been used to compensate the Biden family, including Joe Biden.
Bobulinski says the family received millions in compensation for giving assistance to CEFC while Joe Biden was still vice president.
Hunter Biden is under separate criminal investigation for alleged tax crimes and making a false statement related to a gun purchase, the Washington Post reported earlier this month.
The White House has denied President Joe Biden’s involvement with any of his son’s business dealings.
However, Bobulinski claimed that a 10% stake in the venture was set aside for “the big guy” — Joe Biden.
According to Grassley’s letter, Bobulinski was interviewed by the FBI on October 23, 2020, during which he provided evidence supporting his allegations.
He wrote to the DOJ and the FBI demanding to know if an investigation was ever opened based on Bobulinski’s testimony.
“Based on allegations provided to my office, the information provided by Mr. Bobulinski formed sufficient basis to open a full field investigation on pay-to-play grounds; however, it is unclear whether the FBI did so and whether the information is part of the ongoing criminal investigation by U.S. Attorney Weiss,” Grassley wrote.
He inquired about additional evidence the FBI reportedly has in its possession as well, including a document that notes that then-former Vice President Joe Biden met with Hunter Biden and his business associates at a conference in Los Angeles on May 2, 2017, and May 3, 2017.
Grassley also asked about other documents related to Hunter Biden’s business dealings with the Ukraine gas company Burisma.
“The documents in the FBI’s possession include specific details with respect to conversations by non-government individuals relevant to potential criminal conduct by Hunter Biden,” Grassley wrote.
“These documents also indicate that Joe Biden was aware of Hunter Biden’s business arrangements and may have been involved in some of them.”
He said it was “unclear” whether the FBI followed through with an investigation or whether it improperly dismissed the evidence as Russian disinformation, as a whistleblower claimed it did with other evidence against Hunter Biden.
Timothy Thibault, a senior FBI agent assigned to the Hunter Biden laptop investigation, resigned from the Bureau in August amid allegations of partisanship and bias.
Grassley said the Biden administration needs to provide transparency on these matters and turn over the evidence it has against Hunter Biden to lawmakers.
“The Justice Department’s and FBI’s continued silence on these matters is deafening and further erodes their credibility,” he wrote.
“Simply put, enough is enough — the Justice Department and FBI must come clean to Congress and the American people with respect to the steps they have taken, or failed to take, relating to the Hunter Biden investigation.”
