Chuck Schumer Demands Democrat Sen Menendez’s Resignation after Conviction on Federal Corruption Charges

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has demanded the resignation of Democrat Sen. Menendez (D-NJ) after “Gold Bar Bob” was convicted on federal corruption charges.

As Slay News reported earlier, the jury delivered its verdict Tuesday following a grueling nine-week trial in Manhattan.

After deliberating for three days, the jurors found the Democrat senator guilty on all 18 federal charges.

Sen. Schumer has responded by urging Menendez to “do what is right” and resign.

In a statement shortly after the verdict, Schumer said:

“In light of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign.”

The Democrat Senate leader had previously held off on calling for Menendez to step down.

Leadership refused to weigh in, despite acknowledging the seriousness of the charges.

This came despite calls from the Senate, including from Democrat Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), for Menendez to either resign or be removed.

However, with a conviction being handed to the New Jersey senator by a jury of his peers, Schumer now appears to be comfortable making the request.

Rep. Andy Kim (D-NJ) who is running for Menendez’s Senate seat in November with the Democratic Party’s nomination, has also joined calls for the convicted senator to resign.

In a post on X, Kim said:

“This is a sad and somber day for New Jersey and our country.

“Our public servants should work for the people, and today we saw the people judge Senator Menendez as guilty and unfit to serve.

“I called on Senator Menendez to step down when these charges were first made public, and now that he has been found guilty, I believe the only course of action for him is to resign his seat immediately.

“The people of New Jersey deserve better.”

New Jersey’s Democrat Governor Phil Murphy also issued a statement in light of the verdict.

Murphy pointed to the verdict as evidence that everyone “is accountable to our laws.”

He also joined calls for Menendez to “immediately” step down.

“I reiterate my call for Senator Menendez to resign immediately after being found guilty of endangering national security and the integrity of our criminal justice system,” Murphy said in a statement.

In the case that Menendez does not resign, Murphy has requested that the Senate “vote to expel him.”

“In the event of a vacancy, I will exercise my duty to make a temporary appointment to ensure the people of New Jersey have the representation they deserve,” he promised.
