Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have been ordered to appear before Congress next month for closed-door depositions in the House Oversight Committee’s expanding investigation into Jeffrey Epstein.
The move comes after the Clintons’ attorney attempted to avoid their in-person testimony.
In a November 3 letter, the Clintons’ lawyer, David Kendall, asked Chairman James Comer (R-KY) to excuse the Democrat power couple from appearing, offering instead to submit “a written proffer of what little information” they claim to have about Epstein.
On Friday, Comer rejected that request outright and dropped the hammer, issuing formal orders requiring the Clintons to appear.
As Slay News reported, Comer had threatened to arrest the Clintons and force their testimony if they refused to appear.
Comer made clear that written statements were insufficient.
“As your letter indicates, both President Clinton and Secretary Clinton possess information relevant to the Committee’s investigation,” Comer wrote in response.
“It is precisely the fact President Clinton and Secretary Clinton each maintained relationships with Mr. Epstein and Ms. Maxwell in their personal capacities as private citizens that is of interest to the Committee.”
Under Comer’s order, Bill Clinton is scheduled to appear at 10:00 a.m. on December 17.
Hillary Clinton will follow at 10:00 a.m. on December 18.
New Push for Transparency on Epstein
The Oversight Committee initially voted in July to subpoena the Clintons, along with former law enforcement officials and additional Epstein-related records.
The bipartisan vote saw three Republicans join five Democrats and authorized Comer to move forward.
The chairman issued the subpoenas on August 5.
The decision to compel the Clintons’ testimony comes just days after President Donald Trump signed legislation forcing the release of the remaining Epstein files within 30 days.
Trump has repeatedly urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate Epstein’s political associations, especially his long-documented relationship with Bill Clinton.
Bondi confirmed this week that “new information” has come to the Justice Department and that further investigation is now warranted, even though the DOJ previously closed its Epstein probe earlier this year.
Clinton–Epstein Travel Records Remain Central to Inquiry
Bill Clinton’s relationship with Epstein remains one of the most scrutinized components of the case.
Flight logs show the former president traveled with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell repeatedly, including trips aboard the “Lolita Express” to Bangkok, Brunei, Rwanda, Russia, China, and other destinations.
Trump has publicly suggested that Clinton visited Epstein’s private “Pedophile Island” in the Virgin Islands.
Clinton has denied the allegation.
House Oversight recently released newly obtained emails showing Epstein himself told Maxwell that Clinton was “never ever” on the island.
However, the statement, while noteworthy, remains unverified.
In addition, Clinton could have visited after Epstein made the claim.
There is no evidence that Hillary Clinton ever traveled with Epstein, and neither Clinton has been accused of criminal wrongdoing in connection with Epstein’s trafficking operation.
However, Comer emphasized that the committee is entitled to examine all relevant information directly and in person.
Comer: Written Answers Won’t Cut It
Kendall’s letter insisted the Clintons “welcome legitimate oversight” but argued they have “little to contribute” that cannot be submitted on paper.
Comer rejected that argument.
“The Committee is entitled to a fulsome examination,” he wrote, stressing that only in-person depositions would allow lawmakers to ask necessary follow-up questions under oath.
The Clintons’ forced appearance marks one of the most significant escalations yet in Congress’s renewed scrutiny of Epstein’s network, scrutiny driven in large part by President Trump’s push for unprecedented transparency and Bondi’s acknowledgment that new evidence has emerged.
The depositions are expected to take place behind closed doors.
Nevertheless, Comer has suggested further public action could follow depending on what the Clintons reveal.
