Democrat Rep Al Green Files Article of Impeachment Against Trump Over Handling of Iran

Democrat Rep. Al Green (D-TX) has filed an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump.

Green, whom Trump has previously described as a “low IQ individual,” is accusing the president of bypassing Congress by ordering military strikes on Iranian nuclear sites without legislative approval.

In the resolution, Green alleged that Trump committed an “abuse of presidential powers by disregarding the separation of powers — devolving American democracy into authoritarianism by unconstitutionally usurping Congress’s power to declare war.”

In his Tuesday impeachment filing, Green claims:

“President Trump’s unilateral, unprovoked use of force without congressional authorization or notice constitutes an abuse of power when there was no imminent threat to the United States, which facilitates the devolution of American democracy into authoritarianism.”

The U.S. Constitution gives Congress the sole authority to declare war under Article I.

However, presidents from both parties have often ordered military actions without prior approval from lawmakers.

It’s not unusual for a president to order such strikes, especially in cases presented as urgent or involving national security threats.

In addition, Trump didn’t “declare war,” as Green claims.

The strikes against Iran’s nuclear sites were a swift and precise military operation designed to prevent an escalation into war.

Green, however, argued that Trump crossed a constitutional line by targeting Iran without any imminent threat to the United States or consultation with Congress.

He labeled Trump an “authoritarian president” and a “threat to American democracy.”

Green has previously criticized Trump’s exercise of executive power on issues ranging from immigration to the judiciary to the January 6 Capitol protests.

In a written statement, Green said:

“I did not come to Congress to be a bystander while a president abuses power and devolves American democracy into authoritarianism with himself as an authoritarian president.

“President Trump’s unauthorized bombing of Iran constitutes a de facto declaration of war.”

“No president has the right to drag this nation into war without the authorization of the people’s representatives,” he added.

The White House defended the action and rejected the impeachment premise outright.

In a statement, spokesperson Taylor Rodgers praised the president’s approach and declared the mission a success.

“President Trump was able to quickly accomplish what no other President has been able to achieve — thanks to his ‘peace through strength’ leadership, Iran’s nuclear program has been obliterated and a ceasefire has been agreed to,” Rodgers said.

“Eliminating the prospect of nuclear war is a non-partisan and unifying accomplishment that everyone should celebrate as a historic moment for the United States, the Middle East, and the entire world,” she added.

The impeachment effort highlights the Democrats’ continued false claims about executive overreach in matters of foreign policy.

While presidential war powers have long been a subject of bipartisan debate, Green’s filing makes a deceitful leap to claim that a military operation was a “declaration of war” in order to advance the Democrats’ anti-Trump agenda.

The congressmen’s actions also completely ignore the fact that Trump’s efforts resulted in a ceasefire deal between Iran and Israel, and ended the actual war between the two nations.

Green is an infamous liberal rabblerouser.

He has repeatedly attempted to impeach Trump, filing articles of impeachment as recently as February.

However, Green was widely mocked over the move when he declared that Trump should be impeached for “dastardly deeds.”
