An FBI official has been arrested and charged with sexually abusing multiple children, according to reports.
65-year-old Robert Alexander Smith, an employee with the FBI’s Salt Lake City Division, is accused of sexually molesting at least 5 young girls at his home in Stansbury Park, Utah.
The FBI has responded to reports by confirming Smith is an “employee” but hasn’t revealed details of his role at the federal agency.
However, additional reports have revealed that Smith served as a “Supervisory Intelligence Analyst” at the FBI.
Authorities arrested Smith and booked him into the Tooele County Jail following an investigation by the county sheriff’s office.
The investigation included interviews with five young girls who claim they are victims of the FBI employee, KSLTV reports.
“He was booked on four counts of aggravated sex abuse of a child without incident,” according to court documents.
Authorities charged Smith the following day with four 1st-degree felony counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, four class-A misdemeanor counts of lewdness involving a child, and two class-B misdemeanor counts of lewdness, Fox 13 reports.
Smith’s arrest came after one of the young girls, who was “6 or 7 years old when the abuse occurred,” opened up to her mother about something “very uncomfortable.”
The victim said Smith had forced her to touch him inappropriately under his clothes on multiple occasions in 2020.
Another girl claimed that Smith demanded that she do the same thing to him.
Meanwhile, the other three victims said Smith touched them inappropriately under their clothes, FOX 13 reports.
A Children’s Advocacy Center conducted interviews with the victims, and each testified that inappropriate touching, including some genital touching, occurred during the alleged abuse, KSLTV reports.
According to Smith’s arrest report, he “occupied a position of special trust as it pertains to the victims in this case.”
The National Pulse reports that all five victims’ ages range from pre-teen to high school.
FBI officials offered a statement regarding the arrest.
“We are aware of the arrest of an FBI employee,” the agency told The National Pulse.
“The FBI takes allegations of misconduct very seriously.
“As such, the incident has been referred to the FBI’s Internal Affairs Section.
“We cannot comment further on an ongoing personnel matter.”
Lauren’s Kids, a nonprofit that educates adults and children about sexual abuse prevention, said that child sexual abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnicities and cultures, and in religion and education.
The National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse reports that America has more than 42 million survivors of sexual abuse.
The National Sex Offenders Registry says that a typical pedophile commits 117 sexual crimes in a lifetime.
