GOP Moves to Ban Federal Funds from States and Cities Allowing Non-Citizens to Vote

A group of Republican senators, led by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), will introduce legislation to ban states or cities, that allow non-citizens to vote in U.S. elections, from receiving federal funding.

The new legislation, the Protecting Our Democracy by Preventing Foreign Citizens from Voting Act, is being co-sponsored by GOP Sens. Steve Daines of Montana, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, John Kennedy, of Louisiana, Rick Scott of Florida and James Lankford, R-Oklahoma.

“It’s ridiculous that states are allowing foreign citizens to vote,” Rubio said.

“However, if states and localities do let those who are not U.S. citizens to vote in elections, they shouldn’t get U.S. citizen taxpayer money.”

Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC) will introduce similar legislation in the House.

“Voting in this country is a right that should solely be limited to American citizens,” Duncan said.

“Allowing non-citizens or illegal immigrants to vote, even if only in state or local elections, gives foreign nationals influence on some of the most important decisions impacting our families, our rights, and our representation in government.”

The bill says:

To prohibit the disbursement of Federal funds to State and local governments that allow individuals who are not citizens of the United States to vote in any Federal, State, or local election.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Protecting Our Democ5 racy by Preventing Foreign Citizens from Voting Act’’.
