Democrat Senator Joe Manchin has issued a veiled warning that he may walk from the party amid mounting pressure over his refusal to blindly tow the line.
Manchin put Democrat lawmakers on notice for attacking him after he refused to supprt President Joe Biden’s radical Build Back Better bill.
He also slammed the Biden team’s “absulotely inexcusable” efforts to pressure him into voting for the multi-trillion dollar spending bill.
Manchin is no dummy and he was not happy with Biden’s team for trying to jam the bill with stuff they have wanted to pass but could not for years.
“They couldn’t take away all the social reforms that they’ve had pent up for years,” he said before adding that he has been consistent in his dealing with the Democrats.
As the midterm elections loom, the only thing that can save the Democrats is to stop inflation.
The few tools they can use will cause some pain to some segments of the economy.
Manchin noted that throwing trillions more on top of an overheated economy is madness.
“I’m fiscally responsible and socially compassionate,” he said.
“Now, if there’s no Democrats like that, then they have to push me wherever they want me.
Manchin said: “This is not the president — this is staff. They drove some things, and they put some things out that were absolutely inexcusable. They know what it is, and that’s it.
“They figured surely to God we can move one person. We surely can badger and beat one person up. Surely we can get enough protesters to make that person uncomfortable enough that they’ll just say, ‘OK I’ll vote for anything.
“Well, guess what?
“I’m from West Virginia.
“I’m not from where they’re from and they can just beat the living crap out of people and think they’ll be submissive, period.”
House Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) said: “Honestly, I’m frustrated with every Democrat who agreed to tie the fate of our most vulnerable communities to the corporatist ego of one Senator.
“No one should have backed out of our initial strategy that would have kept Build Back Better alive.”
Rashida Tlaib said Manchin had committed a “betrayal of his constituents.”
Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) said:
“To be clear, my lack and deficit of trust was about Senator Manchin. He has continued to move the goalposts. He has never negotiated in good faith. And he is obstructing the president’s agenda, 85 per cent of which is still left on the table.
“And in obstructing the president’s agenda, he is obstructing the people’s agenda.
“I was listening to his interview earlier today, and he said it’s a mammoth bill/ You’re right.
“It’s a mammoth bill to address mammoth hurt, to lower the cost of eldercare, child care, prescription drug costs, the child tax credit, which is so critical in combating child poverty.”
AOC said: “With BBB delayed, Child Tax Credits will expire and student loans will restart within a matter of weeks. Working families could lose thousands of $/mo just as prices are rising.
“That alone is reason for @POTUS to act on student loans ASAP – w/ either moratorium or cancellation.
“God forbid that they might actually have to show up and stand or sit and actually have to talk and actually live out the threat of their filibuster. I mean, it is unconscionable the way that the Senate operates. It’s fundamentally undemocratic.
“I think right now that Democratic leadership has a very large number of tools at their disposal. The president particularly.
“And it’s really about time that we take the kid gloves off and start using them to govern for working families in this country.”
"I'm fiscally responsible and socially compassionate," Manchin says when asked if there's still a place for him in the Dem party.
"Now, if there's no Democrats like that, then they have to push me wherever they want me," he says on @WVMetroNews.
