LeBron James broke his silence on “woke” WNBA star Brittney Griner’s case, saying if he were in her shoes, he would question returning to the United States because America doesn’t “have her back.”
Leftist Griner is better known for protesting the national anthem than for her athletic skills.
However, she is now locked up in Russia after she was caught carrying drugs while trying to leave the country on the eve of war.
Griner pleaded guilty in the case and she is now facing ten years in a Russian prison.
Despite the prospect of being jailed in Russia, NBA star James claims Griner should consider not returning to the U.S.
“Now, how can she feel like America has her back?” James said.
“I would be feeling like, ‘Do I even want to go back to America?’”
Reps for Brittany Griner say they are hopeful she will receive “no severe sentence” after making the admission in court.
“The guilty plea was her decision informed by discussion with her legal defense team in Russia,” Griner’s legal team said.
“Brittney sets an example of being brave.
“She decided to take full responsibility for her actions as she knows that she is a role model for many people.”
“Considering the nature of her case, the insignificant amount of the substance, and BG’s personality and history of positive contributions to global and Russian sport, the defense hopes that the plea will be considered by the court as a mitigating factor and there will be no severe sentence,” the reps said.
Far-left activist Al Sharpton also said he plans go travel to Russia to help with the case:
“It’s my intention to be in Russia next week.
“And I hope the White House will help to make it possible for me to do a clergy visit to let her know of the support and to let her know that her family and everyone is concerned about her and pray with her.
“And to bring a direct message back to this president from her and to hear from her.
“And you must remember as her wife has told me, she’s in a prison where most of the people can’t even talk English.
“She can’t even communicate with the people that run the prison.
“She’s in a Russian jail.
“This is atrocious at best.
Is she being used as some political tool for Putin? We don’t know.
“Which is why we want to go.”
According to CNN, “Griner’s plea came on the second day of her trial, which began last week, when a prosecutor accused her of smuggling less than a gram of cannabis oil in her luggage.
“According to state media agency TASS, prosecutors argue Griner intended to import the drugs into Russia’s territory and put the prohibited substances into a backpack and a suitcase.”
