Civil rights attorney Leo Terrell has responded to the announcement that Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will be stepping down as Senate Republican leader in November.
As Slay News reported, McConnell announced Wednesday that he is stepping down from his Republican leadership role after a record run in the job.
He is the longest-serving Senate leader in history who maintained his power in the Republican Party for almost two decades.
McConnell, who turned 82 last week, announced his decision Wednesday in the well of the Senate.
“One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter,” he said.
“So I stand before you today … to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate.”
McConnell said he plans to serve out his Senate term, which ends in January 2027, “albeit from a different seat in the chamber.”
Meanwhile, many Republicans have been taking to celebrate the news.
In a series of posts on X, Terrell blasted McConnell and praised the “fantastic news” that he’s stepping down.
“RINO Mitch McConnell is stepping down as Senate GOP leader. I am happy,” Terrell declared in the first post.
“He was a big-time Trump hater. Good riddance.”

President Donald Trump has led the Republican Party into a new era, questioning America’s funding of NATO and international trade agreements while pushing for a severe crackdown on illegal immigration.
McConnell and Trump had worked together in the 45th president’s first term, remaking the Supreme Court and the federal judiciary in a far more conservative image, and on tax legislation.
But there was also friction from the start between the two.
Their relationship has essentially been over since McConnell sides with Biden and the Democrats over the 2020 election.
However, the rupture deepened dramatically after the Jan. 6, 2021, protests at the Capitol.
McConnell assigned blame and responsibility to Trump and said that he should be held to account through the criminal justice system for his alleged actions.
Trump now finds himself on a clear glide path to the Republican nomination.
Other members of the Republican Senate leadership have endorsed Trump.
McConnell has not, however, and that has drawn criticism from other Republican senators and GOP voters.
