Mike Gallagher to Resign from Congress Next Month, Further Shrinking GOP House Majority

The Republicans’ House majority has just been dealt another blow as Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) announced Friday he will be resigning from Congress next month.

Gallagher’s shock resignation further shrinks the tight majority that Republicans have in the House of Representatives.

He will leave the GOP with just a one-seat majority.

The congressman announced Friday that he will leave on April 19.

The news comes after Gallagher announced last month that he would not seek re-election.

Gallagher made the announcement after he cast a crucial vote against impeaching Democrat President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

The impeachment sought to hold Mayorkas to account over the border crisis.

On Friday, Gallagher announced that he would step down next month, a move that has been criticized as “calculated.”

In a statement, Gallagher said:

“After conversations with my family, I have made the decision to resign my position as a member of the House of Representatives for Wisconsin’s Eighth Congressional District effective April 19, 2024.

“I’ve worked closely with House Republican leadership on this timeline and look forward to seeing Speaker Johnson appoint a new chair to carry out the important mission of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party,” he continued.

“My office will continue to operate and provide constituent services to the Eighth District for the remainder of the term.”

Gallagher’s departure will leave the Republican Party with a 217-213 majority, which means the party can only afford a single defection to maintain its majority over the Democrats when voting.

In concluding his announcement, Gallagher said:

“Four terms serving Northeast Wisconsin in Congress has been the honor of a lifetime and strengthened my conviction that America is the greatest country in the history of the world.

“I will forever be proud of the work I did on the Armed Services and Intelligence Committees, chairing the Cyberspace Solarium Commission, and chairing the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.

“It has truly been an honor to serve in the House of Representatives.”

Reports surfaced soon after he made his announcement that Gallagher has reportedly told people that he is taking a lucrative job at Palantir.

Palantir is a software company that specializes in data management.
