MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle has warned Democrats that leaving Elon Musk’s X over President Donald Trump’s victory will only backfire on themselves.
During a Friday segment on “Morning Joe,” Ruhle argued that anti-free speech alternatives to X, such as “woke” pro-censorship social media platform Bluesky, are just leftist “echo chambers.”
Ruhle noted that Democrats who leave X to protest Trump are running the risk of becoming irrelevant.
“Elon Musk bought X and turned it into a, you know, the social media arm of the MAGA movement,” she claimed.
“And we all sat there right in the middle of it during the campaign, possibly not realizing that we’re sitting there like fat chickens just getting attacked all day and just being part of this MAGA messaging.”
She then warned that people who are leaving the platform for Bluesky are siloing themselves from others.
“However, the election is over,” she said.
“Everybody’s getting smarter and better.
“I’m not sure that the right idea is to leave Twitter and just go to Bluesky, a friendlier place, because then we remain in our echo chambers.”
She continued by noting that it’s crucial to hear arguments from both sides, something which X welcomes.
“I don’t think that you should necessarily stay on Twitter every day and battle it out and let yourself doom scroll of all the hate coming at you, but I want to see it,” she continued.
“I want to read what’s happening there, right?
“And so I think at least staying in those spaces is important because I want to hear the other things.”

The comments from Ruhle come amid the latest trend of left-wing accounts with large followings exiting the platform.
Many have announced they are switching to Bluesky in response to Trump’s election victory.
Mark Hamill posted on Bluesky Saturday after joining, then posted on Monday that he’s a “TwitterQuitter.”
However, Hamill’s X account is still active on Friday and has 4.9 million followers.
The Guardian newspaper, a British propaganda outlet, announced its plans on November 13 to stop engaging with the platform.
The organization controls dozens of accounts on the platform that have about 27 million followers combined.
The paper cited its worries about alleged “far-right conspiracy theories” and “racism” on X.
The leftist “news” outlet claims the presidential election confirmed that “X is a toxic media platform and that its owner, Elon Musk, has been able to use its influence to shape political discourse.”
Former CNN anchor Don Lemon posted on November 13 that he once considered the company a tool for “debate and discussion” but decided to leave after seeing X’s new terms of service.
He cited the company policy that states X only allows future legal action against the platform to be handled through the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas.
Lemoh has more than 1.5 million followers on X and is embroiled in a lawsuit against Musk and the platform.
Author Stephen King has more than 7 million followers and often engages in debates with Musk or politicians like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) on the platform.
King posted to his X account on November 14 that he was leaving and would mostly use Meta’s Threads.
He claims that he “tried to stay, but the atmosphere has just become too toxic.”
King’s account is still active as of Friday.
Director Guillermo del Toro posted to his more than 2.4 million followers on November 10, saying his X account will “stay mostly unused (drop in on occasion)” and he “will be more and more at BlueSky.”
Hollywood actress Jaime Lee Curtis, who had more than 745,000 X followers, deactivated her X account on November 13.
She posted a prayer on Instagram with a photo showing the deactivated profile.
However, she did not specify exactly why she decided to shut down her account.
Singer Barbra Streisand posted to her X account (which is still active at the time of writing) on November 14 that “effective immediately” her comments will be posted on Bluesky.
She added “#TwitterExodus” and a link to her new profile.
On November 13, actor Ben Stiller posted “Hello BlueSky” to the leftist platform.
He also promoted his Bluesky account on X for his 5.3 million followers.
He later said “I’m posting on BlueSky…” and “Please come there too…”
Stiller is also still on Musk’s platform as of Friday.
Other celebrities who have recently claimed they’ll no longer use X include:
- Comedian Andy Richter
- Film director Lilly Wachowski
- Actress Alyssa Milano
- Actress Gabrielle Union
- Actress Yvette Nicole Brown
