Pelosi Caught Making False Claims about Trump Case, Gets Shut Down by Fact Checker

Democrat Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) weighed in on President Donald Trump’s New York case but ended up getting caught pushing false claims about America’s justice system.

In a post on Twitter, Pelosi commented on the indictment of Trump on politically motivated charges by George Soros’ Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

As in most Western nations, America’s legal system is based on the concept of “innocent until proven guilty.”

However, Pelosi tried to suggest that these rules don’t apply to the 45th president.

Instead, Pelosi put the burden of proof on the defendants, not the state.

According to Pelosi, Trump will need to go to trial “to prove innocence.”

She said: “The Grand Jury has acted upon the facts and the law.

“No one is above the law, and everyone has the right to a trial to prove innocence.

“Hopefully, the former president will peacefully respect the system, which grants him that right.”

Pelosi made the statement on Twitter and was shut down by the platform’s fact-checking system Community Notes.

The fact checkers reminded the former speaker:

“Ms. Pelosi mistakenly says that Trump can prove his innocence at trial.

“Law in the US assumes the innocence of a defendant and the prosecution must prove guilt for a conviction.

“A presumption of innocence means that any defendant in a criminal trial is assumed to be innocent until they have been proven guilty.

“As such, a prosecutor is required to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the person committed the crime if that person is to be convicted.

“To do so, proof must be shown for every single element of a crime.

“The presumption of innocence is not guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution.

“However, through statutes and court decisions–such as the U.S. Supreme Court case of Taylor v. Kentucky–it has been recognized as one of the most basic requirements of a fair trial.”

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said:

“This is one of the most irresponsible decisions in American history by any prosecutor.

“It is irresponsible because the case was looked at by two previous prosecutors and they passed.

“It has not aged like fine wine.

“The chief witness for prosecution is a convicted felon, Michael Cohen, whose previous lawyer said he is untrustworthy.

“Upon scrutiny, this case folds like a cheap suit.

“So how does this end?

“Trump wins in court and he wins at the ballot box.”
