Netflix Subscription Cancellations Surge after Co-Founder Endorses Kamala Harris

Netflix has suffered a surge in subscription cancellations after the streaming platform’s co-founder endorsed Democrat nominee Kamala Harris for the presidential election.

Reed Hastings endorsed Harris shortly after she jumped into the race in July.

He also donated $7 million dollars to a super PAC supporting Harris’s election campaign, The Information reported.

Shortly after, Netflix saw a huge spike in subscription cancellations.

Netflix’s rate of cancellations nearly tripled following Hastings’ endorsement of Harris.

The exodus of subscribers was revealed in a report from Bloomberg, citing data from Antenna.

After Hastings’ donations became public, supporters of President Donald Trump flooded social media to announce that they had disabled their Netflix accounts.

The hashtag #CancelNetflix went viral on social media, Bloomberg reported.

Netflix customers in the U.S. canceled their subscriptions at a 2.8% rate in July, according to Bloomberg.

Hastings was one of the first among other major tech founders to announce their support for Harris.

Harris launched her campaign in July after lame-duck President Joe Biden dropped out of the race.

“Congrats to Kamala Harris — now it is time to win,” Hastings said in a post on X on July 23.

Biden announced that he was dropping out of the presidential race on July 21 and endorsed Harris.

The decision came after a disappointing debate performance.

Biden’s debate against Trump led to several House Democrats calling for him to drop out of the race.

Harris currently leads Trump by 2%, polling at 49.1% to his 47.1%, according to RealClear Polling averages from Sept. 11 to Sept. 25.

However, Trump has been surging among some of the Democrats’ target demographic.

Harris leads Trump 54% to 40% among Latino voters.

Yet, the 45th president is ahead 13 points on who Latinos believe would better handle border security and immigration, according to a NBC/Telemundo/CNBC poll released Sunday.

Meanwhile, Trump is surging among independent voters, in a bad sign for Harris.

Recent polls suggest that Trump is not only ahead among independent voters but also enjoys a slight overall lead in some pivotal swing states, Breitbart reported.

The Economist/YouGov survey, conducted between September 21 and 27, 2024, reveals a nuanced picture of the electoral preferences of U.S. adult citizens.

Trump commands the support of 42% of independents, slightly edging out Harris’s 40%, with a significant 11% still undecided.

Furthermore, the commitment level among Trump’s independent supporters appears robust.

A notable 95% of them have firmly decided to vote for him, and only 5% might reconsider their choice as the election nears.

This contrasts with the 13% of Harris’s supporters who remain uncertain about their final decision.

In terms of electoral predictions among independents, the division is almost even.

32% foresee a Trump victory, whereas 31% believe Harris will prevail, leaving a large 37% unsure of the outcome.
