He was 87 years old.

Brown died Thursday night, his wife, Monique, announced Friday afternoon.

She said, “It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of my husband Jim Brown.

“He passed peacefully last night at our LA home.

“To the world, he was an activist, actor, and football star.

“To our family, he was a loving and wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.

“Our hearts are broken.”

Brown is survived by Monique, their two children, and three children from his previous marriage to Sue.

“We lost a great fighter,” John Wooten, Brown’s former roommate with the Browns said.

He continued:

“As I talked to Monique and reflected on Jim, my mind went back to what we were.
