Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has been hospitalized during a congressional trip to Luxembourg.
Pelosi reportedly sustained an injury while in the small European country.
The hospitalization was revealed Friday by the congresswoman’s spokesman Ian Krager.
Pelosi will not participate in the delegation’s remaining events while she remains in hospital.
The events are held to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals,” the spokesperson said in a release.
“She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements to honor the courage of our servicemembers during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation’s history.”
It remains unclear what type of injury 84-year-old Pelosi sustained.
Pelosi’s spokesperson said she was “personally and officially” honored to travel with the delegation, many of whom had family members who fought in World War II, including her uncle.
“She looks forward to returning to the U.S. soon,” Pelosi’s team added.
The bipartisan delegation was slated to travel to Belgium and Luxembourg to commemorate the 80th anniversary of when German and Allied forces clashed in the Ardennes region during World War II.
The U.S. lawmakers were poised to take part in observances of the anniversary on Friday and Saturday “along with veterans and their families, active duty service members, government and military officials and foreign dignitaries,” Pelosi’s office said ahead of the trip.
Krager said in Friday’s statement that Pelosi “conveys her thanks and praise to our veterans and gratitude to people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their service in World War II and their role in bringing peace to Europe.”
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi was personally and officially honored to travel with the distinguished delegation, many of whom had family members who fought in World War II — including her uncle, Johnny,” the spokesman said.
“She looks forward to returning home to the U.S. soon.”
The delegation included 18 lawmakers and was being led by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX).
Pelosi’s injury comes days after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) fell during a Republican luncheon.
82-year-old McConnell was spotted returning to his office with a cut on his face.
He was absent from the Capitol on Thursday.
His office said in a statement McConnell remained at home as he experienced leg stiffness caused by the fall.
