Radical Washington D.C. Democrat Trayon White Sr. has been arrested by the FBI, according to reports.
Witnesses say the city councilman was arrested by a large number of agents outside his home in Navy Yard on Sunday.
Law enforcement had reportedly “shut down” the entire block to make the arrest.
Neighbors who saw FBI swarm White described the scene as “crazy” and noted that it looked “pretty serious.”
However, neither the FBI nor the city council has confirmed why White was arrested.
City Council President Phil Mendelson confirmed that fellow council member White was arrested on Sunday afternoon.
“I’ve talked to several people,” Mendelson told a WTTG reporter.
“I can confirm he was arrested around 2 o’clock by the FBI.
“I’m anxious to get more details to understand what is the situation. …
“You all know as much as I know.”
The Chairman’s office also issued a statement regarding White’s arrest, saying:
“Both public trust and integrity in elected officials is critically important.
“We’re trying to gather the facts at this time.”
Witnesses told DC News Now that they saw FBI agents arresting White as he stood beside his car next to the entrance of his apartment building.
“Yeah, it definitely looked like it’s something pretty serious,” said Matthew Mulquin, who witnessed the arrest.
“They had the block shut off for a good time.
“But, yeah, it seemed like they had a good handle.
“We only saw really the second part of it, so.
“But yeah, it’s pretty crazy stuff.”
Neighbors said White’s arrest caught them by surprise.
“You know, just an average Sunday…it was pretty wild to see everybody in the lobby here,” said Briann Auray, who lives in the building next door.
“It’s usually pretty quiet. So it was kind of a shock.”
White represents Ward 8 of the District and has served on the Council since 2016.
He made national headlines in March 2018 when he claimed that snow, “climate change,” and “natural disasters” are caused by wealthy Jews who control the weather.
The claim came as he filmed himself driving through downtown Washington D.C. while ranting about the snow.
White initially defended his comments, saying, “The video says what it says.”
However, he later the video and apologized to the Jewish community.
He has also come under fire for his vocal support of radical Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
White tweeted at Farrakhan in 2013 and said he was “honored” to share a birthday with him.
“I must respect his intelligence, will, & boldness,” White said of Farrakhan.
White would later come under fire in 2018 after it was reported that he donated $500 to a Nation of Islam convention in Chicago.
During the event, Farrakhan attacked Jewish people with anti-Semitic remarks and declared that “powerful Jews” were his enemy.
“I am not resigning, I’m not backing down, I’m not discouraged, I’m not depressed, so run all the media stories you want because my people are going to support me,” White said at the time when faced with backlash.
