DeSantis Fires Back at Gavin Newsom: He Treats Citizens ‘like Peasants’

Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has fired back at Gavin Newsom by noting that the California governor treats his citizens “like peasants.”

Gov. Newsom recently picked a fight with DeSantis by airing ads in Florida that attack the state’s leadership.

However, the move seems to have backfired against Newsom.

Newsom’s effort appears to be a signal that he may be planning a move against Biden for the White House in 2024.

But DeSantis is not taking the attempts to trash him and his state lightly.

“Everybody wants to talk about me and Florida,” DeSantis said in response.

“I’m just sitting here, little old me, doing my job.

“I can just tell you this.

“I was born and raised in this state and until the last few years, I rarely, if ever, saw a California license plate in the state of Florida.

“You now see a lot of them.

“I can tell you if you go to California, you ain’t seeing very many Florida license plates.

“As he was locking down his citizens, he would then go and have these extravagant dinners at the French Laundry, to basically rub his citizens’ noses in the fact that he was treating them like peasants.

“We would never allow what’s happened in places like San Francisco and LA, where these areas have been destroyed with drugs and crime and homeless [being allowed] to happen.

“We take that seriously,” he said.

“And we believe when people commit crimes, they belong behind bars, not released back onto the street.”

Newsom recently ran reelection ads in Florida, not California, attacking DeSantis.

“Newsom’s new ad, first provided to CNN and set to air on July 4, is a mashup of a classic campaign spot, business investment pitch and one of those California tourism commercials full of celebrities saying how much better it is there, wrapped in the existential terror that’s wracking progressives these days,” according to CNN.

“It’s Independence Day — so let’s talk about what’s going on in America,” Newsom says in the ad, standing in the California sun, tieless, as “America the Beautiful” fingerpicks in the background.

“Freedom is under attack in your state.”

Those last words flash across the screen in red, followed by a photo of DeSantis shaking hands with former President Donald Trump, and then another of the Florida governor as Newsom ticks through Florida laws to ban books and restrict voting, speech, and access to abortion.

“I urge all of you living in Florida to join the fight — or join us in California, where we still believe in freedom: Freedom of speech, freedom to choose, freedom from hate, and the freedom to love,” Newsom says as the images proceed from an aerial shot of the Santa Monica Pier to a rainbow flag waving in the hands of two women with arms around each other.

“Don’t let them take your freedom.”
