Secretary of State Marco Rubio has just confirmed that Ukraine has accepted the terms of President Donald Trump’s deal to secure peace with Russia.
On Tuesday, Ukraine accepted a deal put forward by the Trump administration during a meeting in Saudi Arabia.
The news is a step forward for securing a ceasefire and an end to Ukraine’s war with Russia.
“We’ll take this offer now to the Russians,” Rubio told reporters.
“And we hope that they’ll say yes.
“We hope they will say yet to peace.
“The ball is now in [Russia’s] court,” he added.
Rubio, standing alongside National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, did not detail exactly what was in this agreement but said, “Ukraine wants to stop shooting.”
“We hope the Russians answer to that,” he added.
“The best goodwill gesture the Russians can provide is to say yes.”
Rubio said if and when Moscow agrees to this preliminary agreement, the real negotiations can commence.
“We’ve gone from if this war is going to end to how this war is going to end, ” Waltz told reporters.
Issues involving the return of children abducted by Russia and the return of prisoners of war will be addressed in the “second phase,” the pair said.
“The president’s objective here is number one above everything else: he wants the war to end,” Rubio said.
“And I think today, Ukraine has taken a concrete step in that regard.
“We hope the Russians will reciprocate.”

According to a joint statement issued after the meeting in Saudi Arabia, Ukraine has agreed to accept the Trump administration’s proposal for the immediate introduction of a temporary, 30-day ceasefire.
In return, the United States will immediately lift the pause in intelligence sharing and resume security assistance to Ukraine.
The 30-day ceasefire can be extended by mutual agreement, subject to acceptance and simultaneous implementation by Russia.
President Trump has just responded to the news by saying he will invite Zelensky back to the White House.
Trump revealed that the US is going to meet with Russia either later today or tomorrow.
“We want to get the Ukraine war over with,” Trump declared.
