Beckstrom and fellow Guard member Andrew Wolfe, 24, were shot Wednesday afternoon in Washington, D.C.

They were both shot in the head at close range.

Wolfe remains in critical condition.

Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal has been arrested for the shooting and charged with first-degree murder.

United States Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro and U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi have both vowed to pursue the death penalty for Lakanwal.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem noted Wednesday on X:

“The suspect who shot our brave National Guardsmen is an Afghan national who was one of the many unvetted, mass paroled into the United States under Operation Allies Welcome on September 8, 2021, under the Biden Administration.”

President Donald Trump referred to the accused gunman as a “monster” during remarks on Thursday.

The president added that Lakanwal was still hospitalized “in serious condition.”

The president also confirmed that Beckstrom had died while Wolfe was still “fighting for his life.”

According to a Thursday press release:

“At approximately 2:15 p.m., on November 26, 2025, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, assigned to the Force Support Squadron, 167th Airlift Wing, West Virginia Air National Guard, and U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, assigned to the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade, West Virginia Army National Guard, were wounded in a shooting near the Farragut Square Metro Station in Washington, D.C.”

Wolfe’s family asked only for support as he remains in critical condition.

According to The New York Times, a man at Wolfe’s home told a reporter:

“All we need right now are prayers for my son.”
