Hollywood star Susan Sarandon has been forced to issue an apology after triggering a widespread backlash by attacking and smearing police officers who were grieving the deaths of their fallen colleagues.
Sarandon caved after coming under intense backlash from all sides for smearing New York City cops.
NYPD was mourning after two young officers were senselessly gunned down in an ambush.
“I reacted quickly to the picture without connecting it to a police funeral and I realize now how insensitive and deeply disrespectful it was to make that point at that time,” Sarandon said.
“I sincerely apologize to the family of Officers Rivera and Mora for causing additional pain during their time of grieving.”
She also appears to have deleted the offending social media post.
The Oscar-winning actress shared an image earlier this week that showed the thousands of NYPD officers lining up in Manhattan to honor NYPD Detective Jason Rivera with the words:
“I’m gonna tell my kids this is what fascism looks like.
“So, if all these cops weren’t needed for CRIME that day, doesn’t that mean they aren’t needed ANY day.”
Her post also included the hashtag #AbolishPolice.

She faced backlash for her comments from all sides including: “So totally offensive in SO many ways. PLEASE feel free to NEVER call 911—EVER. My son (LA County Deputy) became a cop following his father’s footsteps –who was killed in the line of DUTY.
“You are disgusting!! We need police officers, we absolutely DON’T need worthless actors/actresses like you! So pathetic to disrespect the fallen officers and their families. You should be next on the “cancel culture” list.
“People who say “cops don’t prevent crime” have to be some of the most naive people of all time.
“Every single city that has defunded their police has seen a sharp rise in almost all crimes. If you don’t think that’s correlated you are literally just stupid.
“Honestly, what is wrong with you? Do you have any idea the nightmare that is NYC right now? New Yorkers are terrified by the surge of crime, all because of people like you thinking abolishing the police is would solve anything.
“It [is] the logic of a three-year-old.
“’I suggest she does the duties of a cop for a year and then let’s see how fascist she thinks they are. Cops protect little children, rescue those in distress and vulnerable everywhere. All she does it talk for a living.”
She’s not the only actress in hot water over comments made about the cops.

New York City actress Jacqueline Guzman was let go from Face to Face Films theater company after ranting about street closures during Rivera’s funeral.
In a now-deleted TikTok, Guzman pans over street traffic, showing police cars and ambulances blocking streets.
‘We do not need to shut down most of Lower Manhattan because one cop died for probably doing his job incorrectly,’ she says in the video.
‘They kill people who are under 22 every single day for no good reason and we don’t shut down the city for them, so.’
