Union League of Philadelphia Overrules Protesters, Awards DeSantis with Highest Honor

The Union League of Philadelphia has awarded its highest honor to Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, despite opposition from far-left protesters.

On Tuesday evening, DeSantis received the Union League’s gold medal.

The medal is an honor first given to President Abraham Lincoln back in 1863.

The club was “founded in 1862 as a patriotic society to support the Union and the policies of President Abraham Lincoln, The Union League of Philadelphia laid the philosophical foundation of other Union Leagues across a nation torn by civil war.

“The League has hosted U.S. presidents, heads of state, industrialists, entertainers, and dignitaries from around the globe and has proudly supported the American military in each conflict since the Civil War.

“The Union League continues to be driven by its founding motto, Amor Patriae Ducit or Love of Country Leads.”

Critics of DeSantis receiving the honor pushed false claims about the governor while voicing their opposition.

State Senator Vincent Hughes said: “Why are you promoting this individual who, in their philosophy, sees so many people, black and brown folks, LGBTQ+ folks, as secondhand citizens?”

Rev. Alyn E. Waller of the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church said:

“This is a disgrace. It is wrong.

“It is a smack in the face of the people of this city.

“How are you going to honor someone in a city that is 44% African American, and he has determined that an AP course on African American history has no educational value?

“That is not acceptable.”

Aaron Bashir, a Republican ward leader in Philadelphia, said:

“Whenever you’re trying to come up with something, they always attack you as a racist person, as a person who does not support minority rights. It’s insane.”

The White House has been promoting false claims about DeSantis’s educational plans for Florida’s teaching of black history.

DeSantis said that he wants to stop radical ideology from being shoehorned into black history teaching.

DeSantis addressed the controversy earlier, saying Florida requires teaching black history in its schools.

However, this new AP program, which is a pilot and was only taught in 60 schools last year and will be expanded to only “hundreds” of schools this year, is pushing a political agenda.

According to the program: “2022-23 First pilot at 60 schools across the country. 2023-24 Pilot expands to hundreds of additional high schools. 2024-25 All schools can begin offering AP African American Studies. Spring 2025 First AP African American Studies Exams are administered.”

DeSantis said: “Our state education standards not only don’t prevent but they require the teaching of black history.

“All the important things. That’s part of our core curriculum.”

“It’s not fair that to say that somehow abolishing prisons is somehow linked to black experience, that’s what black people want.

“I don’t think that’s true at all.

“I think they want law and order, just like everyone else wants law and order.”

“When you try to use black history to shoehorn in queer theory, you are clearly trying to use that for political purposes.”

As Slay News reported earlier, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre pushed the false claim onto reporters that DeSantis wants to block black history from schools.

These claims were then eagerly repeated and spread by the Democrats’ allies in the corporate media.

DeSantis’s press secretary Bryan Griffin said:

“The study of African American history is not only permitted in FL but required by law.

“In fact, the teaching of African American History has been expanded in Florida since @GovRonDeSantis took office.”

Manny Diaz Jr., Florida’s Commissioner of Education, said:

“Despite the lies from the Biden White House, Florida rejected an AP course filled with Critical Race Theory and other obvious violations of Florida law.

“We proudly require the teaching of African American history. We do not accept woke indoctrination masquerading as education.”
