A video has emerged that shows the shocking moment that flames erupted from a packed Boeing passenger plane’s engine as it took off from an Italian airport.
The Hainan Airlines flight was heading to the Chinese city of Shenzen on Sunday.
However, shortly after leaving the runway, the Boeing 787 was forced to turn around and make an emergency landing at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport.
The aircraft’s right engine burst into flames after takeoff.
The plane had 249 passengers and 16 crew members on board.
Footage of the moment shows the plane soaring in the sky before an orange flicker appears on one side of the machine.
Within seconds, multiple blazes can be seen emerging from the engine as the Boeing continued its course ahead.
Following the terrifying incident, the Italian Coast Guard said in a statement that the plane was reportedly struck by a flying bird.
But the Boeing plane swiftly turned back and made a safe landing after dumping fuel over the sea.
There were no delays to air traffic at Fiumicino, an Italian airport official confirmed.
