Biden Sparks Backlash for Awarding Liz Cheney with Presidential Citizens Medal

Lame-duck President Joe Biden has sparked a backlash for awarding disgraced former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) the Presidential Citizens Medal.

The medal is one of the highest civilian honors in the nation.

Biden awarded the second-highest civilian medal to 20 people on Thursday, including Cheney and Bennie Thompson (D-MS).

Both Cheney and Thompson were leaders of the Democrats’ anti-Trump congressional “investigation” into the January 6 2021 protests at the U.S. Capitol.

“President Biden believes these Americans are bonded by their common decency and commitment to serving others,” the White House said in a statement.

“The country is better because of their dedication and sacrifice.”

The White House said Biden will recognize Cheney among 20 recipients chosen because they “performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens.”

The decision to honor Cheney, a controversial figure within the Republican Party, has raised eyebrows in conservative circles.

Cheney, who served as vice chair of the Jan. 6 Committee, lost her congressional seat in 2022 over her attacks against President Donald Trump.

The White House praised Cheney for her “bipartisan” work and commitment to “defending democratic ideals.”

In the statement, the White House also deceitfully described Jan. 6 as an “attack.”

“Throughout two decades in public service, including as a congresswoman for Wyoming and vice chair of the committee on the Jan. 6 attack, Liz Cheney has raised her voice — and reached across the aisle — to defend our nation and the ideals we stand for: Freedom. Dignity. And decency,” the White House said.

“Her integrity and intrepidness remind us all what is possible if we work together.”

Many of the medal recipients have personal ties to Biden, including Ted Kaufman and Christopher J. Dodd.

Dodd and Kaufman are two close advisers Biden has known for decades.

Kaufman, 85, played a significant role in Biden’s early Senate career, serving as his chief of staff.

Dodd, a former Democrat senator from Connecticut, assisted Biden in selecting his running mate during the 2020 election.

Biden has referred to Dodd as his “single best friend” in Congress.

The decision to honor Cheney has sparked heated debate on social media, meanwhile.

Critics on X questioned whether her work truly merits such recognition.

Most conservatives view Cheney as a divisive figure.

Many argue that her alignment with Democrats during the politically motivated Jan. 6 investigation undermined her party and alienated her constituents.

The award highlights a broader trend of Biden celebrating figures who have supported his administration’s priorities or publicly opposed Trump.

Critics argue that this approach politicizes what should be an impartial recognition of civic contributions.

While Biden’s allies hail Cheney as a symbol of bipartisanship and integrity, her critics see this honor as another attempt by the administration to prop up individuals who align with their narrative.

For conservatives, it’s yet another reminder of the growing disconnect between the Republican base and establishment figures like Cheney.
