Democrats Are Ignoring What ‘Voters Have Been Telling Pollsters,’ Report Warns

A new report has sent a warning to the Democrats that the party is ignoring what voters are saying ahead of the critical 2024 election.

A new piece from Politico argues that the Democrats are right to be worried about 2024.

However, instead of President Joe Biden’s general poor polling, the Democrats ought to be worried specifically about Biden’s poor polling on economic issues.

The piece, written by Mileah Kromer, is titled, “Democrats Are Panicking About the Wrong Thing.”

The subheading reads, “Polls that show Joe Biden trailing other candidates aren’t worth much at this point.

“What voters are saying about the economy is what Democrats need to be alarmed about.”

Kromer starts off by highlighting just how poorly Biden has been doing in the polls.

The author points out three recent poll results in particular: the NBC poll in which Biden recently received the lowest approval rating of his presidency, the Economist/YouGov poll that found that only about 25% of Americans want Biden to seek reelection in 2024, and the New York Times/Siena College poll that found that former President Donald Trump is beating Biden in five key swing states – out of six – in hypothetical 2024 polling.

As a result of these polls, Kromer correctly notes that concern has grown among Democrats about Biden’s chances in the 2024 general election.

According to Kromer, however, this is not what the Democrats ought to be worried about.

Rather, they ought to be worried about how Americans view Biden’s handling of the economy.

Kromer writes:

“Horse race polls, approval ratings and other candidate-centered indicators a full year out from the 2024 election aren’t something Democrats need to set their hair on fire over — at least not yet.

“Instead, what should be causing a considerable sense of panicked urgency is what voters have been telling pollsters about economic issues.”

After pointing out just how important economic issues are in elections, Kromer goes on to highlight the fact that Americans know that the U.S. economy has not been doing too well under Biden’s economic policies – which have come to be known as “Bidenomics.”

“Over the last year, polls have shown voters holding a decidedly grim economic outlook,” Kromer writes.

“Most Americans rate current economic conditions as ‘poor.’

“Many think we are in a recession and aren’t optimistic that things will improve.”

The author continues:

“They view Republicans as better able to address economic issues and, in the crucial battleground states, have more trust in Trump than Biden to do a better job on the economy — and by a whopping 22 points.

“An October poll from PRRI found that, in a rare moment of bipartisan agreement, ‘increasing costs of housing and everyday expenses’ topped the list of the most important issues for voters.

“Other polls have found similar results. ”

Kromer goes on to give examples of how economic issues could win – or lose – elections.

Kromer then concludes by, once again, calling for Democrats to start addressing economic issues and by optimistically suggesting that Biden still has time to “reshape public attitudes on the economy.”

This remains to be seen.

But, Kromer’s overall point – that Biden and the Democrats need to address the economy or it could be their undoing in 2024 – is a legitimate one.
