Trump ‘Open’ to Serving as House Speaker in Short Term

President Donald Trump is reportedly “open” to serving as the interim House speaker after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was ousted from the position in a historic vote on Tuesday.

Fox News host Sean Hannity has reported that Trump is “open” to the idea of filling the role in the short-term

The idea is currently being floated by a number of House Republicans and conservative leaders.

“McCarthy will not seek the speakership again. Now, sources telling me at this hour some House Republicans have been in contact with and have started an effort to draft former President Donald Trump to be the next speaker,” Hannity said.

“And I have been told that President Trump might be open to helping the Republican Party, at least in the short term, if necessary, if it’s needed.”

As Slay News reported earlier, Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) took to Twitter/X to announce that McCarthy will not be running for the position again.

In the post, Nehls also announced that is nominating the 45th president to fill the open position.

According to House rules, members can nominate an individual for speaker who is not a member of Congress.

During McCarthy’s battle for the position in January, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) nominated Trump during the speaker vote.

During the last vote, serval Republicans also indicated that they’d back Trump for the role that eventually went to McCarthy.

On Tuesday night, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) reportedly told Sean Hannity that he would back Trump this time around.

Jordan, who has endorsed Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, has also received nominations from his GOP colleagues to replace McCarthy as speaker.

However, Jordan said that a potential bid for the role will be “up to the conference.”
